The artist Ben Reyer is best known for his socially critical collages, which are peppered with excerpts from western popular, advertising and print media. An angel hugs a cigarette or the Marlboro Man dines at McDonalds. Most of his work is lined with a good dose of humor, making it easier to confront its critical themes. It is no different with his remixing of well-known logos.
The “Sick Times” graphic, in red and white, is a remixed appropriation, laced with new contextual levels of meaning, of the again and again copied style of the logos used by prevailing news media – the graphic aesthetics can easily be associated with Life Magazin or the German Bild Zeitung.
